One of the things that excites me the most on this journey to a healthier me is when I start seeing/feeling the changes in my body. When your clothes start feeling looser and you go up a notch on your belt, that’s when you know you are doing well. We all need that reward for working so hard to make this change. If you are like me, once those changes begin to occur, you will work even harder toward reaching your goals.
In 2008 I was at my heaviest, tipping the scale at 265 pounds. I was a Production Manager at a plastics facility working a lot of crazy hours. 13 hour days, Monday thru Thursday and then another 9-10 on Fridays. I had developed poor eating habits during this time. I usually did not eat breakfast, drank ridiculous amounts of coffee, a “not so good” lunch that was usually some type of frozen dinner, splitting a pizza with someone or whatever fast food someone would go out and get. Candy bars and chips from the snack machines, then go home and eat a late night dinner. Then I would not go to sleep until midnight, up at 5 AM and start the process all over. This was my schedule and it was taking its toll on me. I looked and felt horrible. I was one the straight path to either diabetes or a heart attack. I had to make a change and I had to make it fast.
I had seen the infomercial “Get Ripped in 90 Days” several times on television. This is the P90X program I have mentioned before. I usually just changed the channel when it was on, I figured it had to be another television scam. I was looking at these people who made these amazing transformations and thinking, “This is BS, not even the same people!” Then I ran into my buddy Chris one day and I noticed he was looking slim and trim. I told him how good he was looking and asked what kind of diet he was on. He said, “I am not on a diet, I have been doing P90X and it has been great. That is all it took for me, someone I actually knew someone who had tried this and got results. I went home, got online and ordered the program, it was the best $100 investment I had ever made. Although the program was very hard, I stayed with it and it changed my life. I went from 265 pounds to 225 lbs in a 90 day period. Now I did not get all ripped up like the guys on television but, you could tell I had muscles!. This helped push me into finding more ways to get better results.
I was losing weight but, my belly was still flabby. The changes in my body and the results I was seeing made me want even more. I found my body craving workouts and I needed to feed the machine in me to keep it running a peak proficiency. I began studying more and more about the body and discovered that exercise was only half or the equation. Nutrition is just as important as the exercise. P90X had a nutrition guide in it but, I found it to be too difficult to follow with my crazy work schedule. I had incorporated some of the foods that were in the guide but not all. I started researching for a better plan, one that the everyday guy could do, regardless of work schedule. That research led me to the Abs Diet by David Zinczenko. I have mentioned this before in some of my past blogs and I still use this today. I went from 225 to 180 in short amount of time. It was easy and along with my exercise regime, I had lost 85 lbs in a short period of time. I had gotten obsessed with being healthy and being in shape. The results I saw made me want more and more. I was addicted to being healthy, whodathunkit!!
When you start seeing changes, you want more, I think that is only human nature. I have let myself go for almost 3 years and it has been an uphill battle to get this weight off to say the least. Last year, we went and saw Garth Brooks in concert with some friends. I did not realize how big I had gotten till I saw the picture below posted on Facebook the next day. I got on the scale and it hit me like a tone of bricks. In this picture, taken 1 year ago today, I weighed 263 pounds.
I worked on losing weight last year but was not fully committed. I did lose about 10 lbs in about 12 months. I committed myself to not just losing weight but to change to a healthier life style and have son far lost 8.6 pounds in 30 days. My clothes fit looser and I just went up a notch on my belt today. I am back in healthy addiction mode! I am looking forward to the changes I see after these 30 days are up. this is me today and I feel so much better than I did even 30 days ago.
I hope you are finding something useful for my blog. I have found it helps hold me accountable not only to those who may take the time to read it, but to myself. It pushes me to do better, to make a difference in my life so I can be the husband and father my family deserves. Please feel free to comment or make suggestion anytime. Thanks for reading and go get addicted to a healthy way of life!
